djtxt: Collaborative Grooveshark music playlists via SMS, Twitter and email

Fresh from the fragrant and bohemian confines of the New York 2011 Music Hack Day comes djtxt, a surprisingly awesome Web app that lets you collaborate on the perfect Grooveshark party music playlist.

All you have to do is run the djtxt 'client' (which is just a matter of opening Grooveshark and clicking a bookmarklet) on a computer that's attached to some (preferably loud) speakers. Anyone can then SMS, tweet or email to add songs to the playlist. It's surprisingly easy and it works really well! Songs are added within a few seconds of an email or tweet being received by the djtxt robot -- we didn't test SMS, but presumably it's just as fast.

If you want to see it in action, just follow the first two steps on the djtxt website, then follow the instructions on the Grooveshark page. We'll be listening to the demo playlist in the Download Squad bunker, so feel free to entertain us with your choice of funky beats! If you like what you see (hear?), set up your own djtxt party, turn the volume up to 11, and rock on. Incidentally, if there's a song that you don't like, you can even send djtxt a 'skip' message -- but you can only do it once every 20 minutes!

If you're at work and unable to test it out, there's a video demonstration after the break.

Swedish airplane drifting is awesome, unintentional [Video]

A pilot for Scandinavian Airlines found a slippery surface upon landing in Sweden, causing him to unintentionally drift the plane. At least, "unintentionally" is the story he's telling. Gymkhana with a plane, anyone? More »

MSI Dual Pad concept eyes-on (video)

Complementing the integrated projector concept introduced at CES last month, MSI brought a new not-for-sale hottie to its CeBIT booth this week in the form of the Dual Pad, which is... well, literally two WindPads placed on top of one another. The idea is that the pads can be taken apart and used as two completely independent Windows 7 tablets when necessary -- "you and your girlfriend on a trip" was the example given to us during the press conference -- but when you piece them together, they become one mega-tablet capable of operating essentially as a single dual-screen netbook (a hingeless, permanently-open one). Again, it's a pure concept; there are no plans for commercialization that we could eke out, but we can't imagine it'd be cheap since you'd effectively be buying two complete tablets. Follow the break for video!

Lacie?s Little Big Drive Shows Thunderbolt Is Great for Storage

Boom! As quick as a flash, Lacie has announced what is probably the first Thunderbolt-compatible hard drive to market. And when I say “to market”, I mean “to have a press release.” The drive is a version of Lacie’s Little Big Disk, the compact 7200rpm USB/FireWire/eSATA drive that is already pretty well-specced as it [...]

Watch live NBA and NHL games on YouTube? Google's working on it.

youtube watch live nba nhl games
According to a report from Bloomberg, Google is in active discussions to bring two marquee professional sports leagues to YouTube: the NBA and NHL. Google has already successfully shown IPL cricket matches, and is now moving on to European soccer leagues as well as the NBA and NHL. Bloomberg doesn't just cite "sources familiar with the situation," either. Rather, the confirmations come from two Googlers: Gautam Anand, director of content partnerships for Asia Pacific, and Brian Suh, head of YouTube Partnership at Google's Korean HQ.

The NHL seems like a no-brainer. Commissioner Gary Bettman is frothing at the mouth for expanded broadcast coverage, and YouTube could certainly provide that. Getting live NHL games on YouTube also wouldn't cost as much as some other sports, either, due to the league's relatively low position on the pro sports ladder in the U.S.

The NBA might be a tougher sell, and it would definitely be a more costly venture -- but one which could vault YouTube into a very competitive position in the world of broadcast sports. "It's fair to say that there will be a lot more appealing sports content you'll see on YouTube," Anand told reporters. "We have ongoing conversations with pretty much everyone."

The NHL's Gary Meager did not respond to requests to comment on the situation, and the NBA's Michael Bass only offered that the NBA is "pleased that YouTube recognizes the value of live sports." We'll have to wait and see what materializes, so for now don't go counting on YouTube to be your video feed for the 2011 Stanley Cup run or this year's NBA Finals.

How to change a default application on Android

android
This week's tips series is all about Android, highlighting some the operating system's built-in utilities, and better ways of getting stuff done. For other technology tips, check our Tips index.

When you first try an alternative launcher or Web browser, Android asks if you'd like that application to be the default from now on. You may say yes and then come to regret it later on - perhaps you've decided you like another launcher better, or wish to go back to using the stock Android browser.

While you could always uninstall the application you no longer wish to be the default, that's a bit of a brute-force solution. Perhaps you still want it on your system, but only wish to use it every now and then.

To make an app stop being a "default application" for a certain type of action, do this:

1) Go to Settings > Applications > Manage applications.
2) Locate your application in the list. If the list is too long, you can hit the Running tab, because your app most likely is still running somewhere in the background.
3) Once you've located it, tap its name.
4) You will now find yourself in the Application info screen. Scroll down until you see the heading which says Launch by default.
5) Press the Clear defaults button, shown in the screenshot.

When you next try to perform the operation previously associated with this app (launch a browser, go to the home screen, etc.), you will be presented with a dialog letting you choose what app should be used. Presto!

Sony is treating its portable gaming fans well these days by giving them the one-two punch of having both a world-beating device to look forward to in the future and an affordable one to pass the time with until then. Skip past the break for the full press release and the new ad video to promote the cheaper portable.

Visualized: the HTC keyboard slider family

Clockwise from the top left, that's the the Sprint Arrive, the likely-for-Verizon Merge, the Sprint Evo Shift 4G, and the T-Mobile G2. If we had to rate them, we'd say the Arrive has the best key feel, followed by the Merge, the Evo Shift, and finally the cramped G2 -- although the super cheap-feeling hinge on the Evo Shift knocks off several points. We'd also say the physical keys on the G2 feel better than the mushy keys on the Merge, but the G2's cramped layout doesn't do it any favors. In any event, picking one of these is a pretty great problem to have, don't you think?
