'The Collective' steampunk USB drive is the stocking stuffer Jules Verne always wanted

Miffed you didn't buy that $300 8GB steampunk USB drive we shared over the summer? Well, the good news is if you've got $395 worth of shillings lying around, Will Rockwell's 16GB steampunk USB drive christened "The Collective" is yours for the taking. Besides its J.J. Abrams-like name, particularly cool details to highlight include a brass manifold featuring four coolant pipes, a large framed cabochon which acts as a service light, and a faux-gauge made from a domed cover and watch hand. A storage tank serves as a cap for the drive and there's even a tiny plaque bearing Mr. Rockwell's engraved John Hancock placed smack dab in the middle. Last but certainly not least, the elaborate thumbdrive ships with a velvet platform and a glass museum case, so that all who visit may bask in its craftsmanship and finally see the rusted version owned by that Victorian-poser down the block as the tetanus carrier it really is.

Firesheep comes to webOS

It's not as fast or pretty as its desktop cousin, but an ambitious tinkerer has still managed to port Firesheep to webOS. Yes, all the Wi-Fi tomfoolery that made you shudder as a Firefox extension can run on your Palm Pre.The man who performed the shoehorning -- who happens to be called Sebastian but probably isn't our Sebastian-- has shared a YouTube video of his handiwork which you can check out after the break.

Homebrew and hacking is part of the fun of owning a webOS device, so it's not really a surprise to see Firesheep running -- and it's pretty darn cool, if only as a proof-of-concept.

Chromium can now create shortcuts for Chrome Web Apps

Google Chrome can already create application shortcuts for your favorite sites via the wrench menu. The option had disappeared for a while, but made its return earlier this year. Adding Gmail to your taskbar is as simple as loading it in a tab, clicking the wrench, choosing tools and then clicking create application shortcut.

Recently, Chromium added that same functionality to Chrome Web apps. If you've got any apps installed, you can right click its icon on your new tab page and choose create shortcut. A menu like the one pictured above will appear, and you can then pin your Chrome Web app the Windows 7 taskbar or slap a shortcut on your desktop or start menu.

This is currently only available in Chromium, but expect to see Web app shortcuts make their way to the Canary and Dev builds in short order. Google is making a push to get the Chrome Web Store launched, and polished app support in Chrome will need to be in place prior to, well, whenever that happens.

Thanks, Trilby!

Archos family of internet tablets finally receives update to Android 2.2 Froyo

 Archos Internet Tablets receive FroYo

Archos, which recently revealed its FroYo update timeline via Facebook, has held true to its word.  As of today, anxious Archos internet tablet owners can get in on the Froyo goodness. For their price and functionality, the Archos line of internet tablets are an excellent option if you're in the market for an Android powered portable media player or tablet.  I'm guilty of owning an aged iDevice from 2007, and I'm looking for any reason to ditch it for an Android PMP, and this FroYo update could be what it took for me to get on board with Archos.

FroYo brings quite an impressive list of improvements and enhancements to the Archos family.  In addition to the infamous JIT compiler, Android 2.2.1 brings enhanced Microsoft Exchange support, better 3rd party application support, improved camera operation, faster USB transfer and more.

Hit the break for a full list of improvements.  And of course, head into our tablet forums to share your thoughts.  Let us know what you think of FroYo on your Archos tablet.  [Archos.com]

HTC releases source code for Legend Froyo update

HTC Legend

HTC has released the source code for the Legend's Android 2.2 Froyo update. No, that doesn't mean you have to download something all over again. It means that modders now have access to the official kernel, which is nerdspeak for the official code that makes Android 2.2 work on the HTC Legend. Don't worry your pretty little head about it. But for you modding types, get to downloading! [HTC Developer Center]

Yahoo outs Messenger 11 beta with loads of new features

Yahoo! Messenger remains one of the most popular desktop IM clients around, and its users are now able to get a taste of what's coming in version 11. Like its biggest competition -- Windows Live Messenger -- Y! Messenger 11 is about creating a more current, social messaging app.

One of the biggest additions is Facebook chat support -- which works nicely, though former Squadder Brad Linder noted that Meebo thought I was offline. Twitter support has been added, and Messenger 11 also offers write-once-post-everywhere updates to Facebook, Twitter, and Yahoo! Pulse. More social gaming options have been added, and will soon include Zynga's Mafia Wars and Fishville. Yahoo! Messenger 11 also allows multiple sign-ins, so you won't get disconnected from your desktop if you sign in on your mobile device. Windows 7 users can change status, send messages, and sign in and out via Messenger 11's jump list.

In his announcement, Yahoo's John Dunning also has some good news for Android users. Yahoo! Messenger for Android will be updated soon with better video chat support. Currently, only users with an EVO or MyTouch 4G can utilize the feature, but additional handset support is on the way.
